Weight Management

With so many types of treats out there, it’s easy to get carried away and spoil our pets. It’s no wonder that pet obesity rates increase year after year. When it comes to our loyal companions, losing weight is not always as simple as eating less and moving more. To ensure your pet has a healthy weight loss (or weight gain) journey, it’s best to reach out to our veterinary team. How do I know if my pet is overweight or underweight?

The best way to know for sure is during a consultation with one of our veterinarians. Some pets are naturally thin (think of Greyhounds). They may look gaunt but are actually healthy. On the other hand, some pets are naturally on the chubby side (think of Bulldogs). Our vets will know the measurements and weight levels that are normal for your pet’s age, species and breed. When considering your pet’s weight, there are certain signs you can look out for.

Overweight Underweight
  • No waist/distinction between chest and stomach
  • Pot belly
  • Ribs or spine cannot be felt underneath their fur/skin (covered with a thick layer of fat)
  • Easily fatigued or out-of-breath
  • Multiple rows of ribs sticking out (not a lot of fat in between their skin and bones)
  • Easily fatigued or out-of-breath
  • Dull, dry or matted coat
